A human adult or animal is one that has grown to its full potential. In the realm of human beings, adult is a reference to legal and social concepts. Legal adult means a person attains the age of maturity. They are considered autonomous, self-sufficient as well as responsible. It is possible to refer to them as a "major". It is generally accepted that the threshold at which an individual becomes a legal adult is 18. It is possible for this to be different based on rights under the law and country as well as psychological development.

In the lifespan of human beings adulthood is the age when a person attains full physical and intellectual maturity. Most people think that adulthood starts at 20 years or greater. The middle age stage, which begins at about 40 years then follows by the age of 60 years old. There are three main levels of adulthood: beginning in early the age of adulthood (18 to mid-30s) and middle adulthood (mid-30s until mid-60s) and then the final stage of adulthood (mid-60s until end of life). Early adulthood is the stage of physical maturation that we are at when we turn 20 to 40 years aged. We are a little taller and heavier, however, may slightly grow. As we enter our early adulthood the physical capabilities of our bodies are at their peak, including the strength of our muscles, our reaction speed sensors, as well as heart function.
